Gov. Kim Reynolds has ordered all flags in Iowa to fly at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Wednesday, June 30, 2021 to honor two fallen U.S. Navy 1st Class Firemen who served on the USS Oklahoma when it was attacked at Pearl Harbor during World War II. Both have returned home after nearly 80 years.

Navy Fireman 1st Class William D. Tucker of Bedford, Iowa was assigned to the USS Oklahoma when it was moored at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor and quickly capsized during multiple torpedo hits on December 7, 1941. Tucker was 19-years-old. Navy personnel recovered remains of the deceased crew members. Some of those members, including Tucker, were identified much later. He will be buried in his hometown tomorrow.

Navy Fireman 1st Class Leo Keninger was laid to rest in his hometown of Ackley, Iowa on Saturday, June 26, 2021. Keninger grew up on the family farm northwest of Ackley and was 20- years-old when he lost his life serving his country. He also served on the USS Oklahoma.

Flags will be at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex. Flags will also be half-staff on all public buildings, grounds and facilities throughout the state.

Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.
