November 7-8, 2024 - Half Staff Alert - Alabama

I hereby authorize flags be flown at half-staff beginning at 5:00 p.m., Thursday, November 7 through sundown, Friday, November 8, 2024, on the grounds of the Alabama State Capitol Complex in Montgomery, and in Coffee, Covington, Dale and Pike counties in State Senate District 31, to honor the life and service of former State Senator Jimmy Holley of Elba, who passed away at the age of 80 on Monday.

Senator Jimmy Holley dedicated his career and much of his life to public service. A Coffee County native, Senator Holley attended Troy State College and East Tennessee State University. Upon his return home to Elba, he donned many hats as high school principal, owner of Elba Ford Tractor Company, and as a member of the Alabama National Guard. Later, he would also serve as a longtime administrator for Troy University. Jimmy Holley was best known for his extensive career and many contributions as an Alabama Legislator. In 1974, he successfully ran for the State House representing his home county. After five terms in office, he turned his gaze to the State Senate, winning a total of six terms before his retirement in 2022. Senator Jimmy Holley’s remarkable 44 years of combined legislative service not only ensured he was a strong and effective representative for his constituents in Coffee, Covington, Dale, and Pike counties, but also enabled him to accumulate a vast knowledge of the process which afforded him great influence. During my time as Lt. Governor, Senator Holley always made his presence felt in the shaping of legislation. It was an honor to work with him for the people of Alabama. He was a true statesman and will be missed.

The flags on the grounds of the State Capitol Complex and in Coffee, Covington, Dale and Pike counties may be flown at half-staff though sundown, Friday, November 8, 2024.
