July 13, 2024 - Half-Staff Alert - Missouri

Governor Mike Parson ordered all government buildings to lower flags to half-staff in honor of fallen Boone County Assistant Fire Chief Matthew Tobben on July 13. Government buildings referenced in the press release are in Boone County, the Fire Fighters Memorial of Missouri in Kingdom City and firehouses statewide on July 13, from sunrise to sunset in honor of Tobben as he is laid to rest Saturday.

Tobben assisted a Columbia Fire Department firefighter with a swift water rescue of two individuals on the morning of July 8 at Bear Creek. The people had gotten caught in the flooding conditions due to heavy rain that came through the region. He was able to help rescue the two from the water before the boat lost power and overturned while he was still in the vessel.

Tobben's bravery kept the civilians and other firefighters safe.

Assistant Chief Matt Tobben’s life was defined by courageous, selfless public service,” said Governor Parson. “Within five days, Mr. Tobben took part in two daring rescues of flooding victims in dangerous swift water conditions, and that's just one example of his nearly 20 years of commitment to the wellbeing of his fellow citizens. Teresa and I extend our condolences to Mr. Tobben's loved ones as we keep them all in our prayers."
