Today, Governor Larry Rhoden ordered that flags be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol from sunrise until sunset on Saturday, December 27, 2025, in honor of former state legislator Orville (Orv) Smidt. He served in the South Dakota State House of Representatives from 1999 to 2005, and he served in the South Dakota State Senate from 2005 to 2009.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm CT on Saturday, December 27, 2025, at GracePoint Wesleyan Church in Brookings, SD.
