September 11, 2001 – The Terrorist Attacks
On the morning of September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists from the extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airplanes in the United States. Two planes were flown into the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers in New York City, causing both towers to collapse within hours. A third plane struck the Pentagon near Washington, D.C. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, was headed toward another target in Washington but passengers fought back, and it crashed in a field in Pennsylvania.
Nearly 3,000 people were killed, making it the deadliest terrorist attack in world history. The attacks shocked the nation and the world, leading to the War on Terror, the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan, and lasting changes to U.S. security, aviation, and foreign policy.
