November 19-24, 2025 - Half-Staff Alert - West Virginia

Governor Morrisey ordered flags to be flown at half staff to honor the life of former State Senator and House of Delegates representative Tony Whitlow.

Upon hearing of Whitlow’s passing, Governor Morrisey issued the following statement:

“I am saddened to hear the news of the death of former State Senator and House of Delegates Representative Tony Whitlow. Tony dedicated his life to service, to our nation in the US Army, and then for many years to the people of West Virginia and his community in Mercer County. His career in public service was marked by a deep commitment to his constituents and a tireless work ethic. We mourn the loss of a true public servant and a dedicated West Virginian. My prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”

Flags displayed at the Capitol Complex in Charleston and at all State facilities throughout Mercer County shall be lowered to half-staff from Noon on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, until dusk on Monday, November 24, 2025.

Tony E. Whitlow was born in Kellysville, Mercer County, West Virginia, and graduated from Oakvale High School in 1951. Drafted into the Army in 1953, he served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1955. Whitlow was first elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates in 1970. He went on to serve six terms in the House of Delegates, three terms in the West Virginia Senate, and one term as Mercer County Assessor. He dedicated his entire life to public service and was a leader in shepherding efforts to help recognize and honor veterans of West Virginia and the United States.
