August 29, 2019 - Half-Staff Alert - Michigan

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags within the State Capitol Complex to be lowered to half-staff on Thursday, August 29, 2019, to honor the life and service of former state Representative Don Gilmer and coincide with his memorial service.

“Representative Gilmer was a thoughtful leader and advocate for the people of Kalamazoo County and Michigan,” Whitmer said. “He worked tirelessly on behalf of Michiganders and his constituents, and our state is better because of his service. My thoughts are with Representative Gilmer’s family during this difficult time.”

Former Representative Gilmer’s career in public service started before his election to the Michigan State House in 1976. In 1972, he was elected to the Kalamazoo County Commission and served as chair in 1974. Governor Milliken named him to the state’s commission on farm labor. In 1976, he was elected to the Michigan State House and served until 1998.

During his time in the Michigan State House, Representative Gilmer chaired the Appropriations Committee. Following his departure from the legislature, he served as Lottery Commissioner, State Budget Director, County Administrator in Kalamazoo County, and on former Governor Jennifer Granholm’s Emergency Financial Panel.

Representative Gilmer passed away on August 12 at the age of 73. He is survived by his wife Lynn, his three children, and three grandchildren.

The State of Michigan recognizes the duty, honor, and selfless service of Representative Don Gilmer by lowering flags to half-staff within the State Capitol Complex.
