The school where Flag Day was founded is the old Stony Hill School, located in Waubeka, Wisconsin. On June 14, 1885, a young teacher named Bernard J. Cigrand held the first formal observance of Flag Day with his students, encouraging them to reflect on the meaning and history of the American flag. Cigrand was passionate about patriotism and believed the flag deserved a special day of recognition. His efforts sparked a national movement, and over time, Flag Day grew in popularity across the United States. Although Flag Day wasn’t officially established as a national observance until President Woodrow Wilson's proclamation in 1916, the roots trace back to that small one-room schoolhouse. Today, the Stony Hill School stands restored as a historic site, visited by many who wish to honor the origin of this patriotic tradition and the teacher whose vision helped shape it.
