Today, Governor Larry Rhoden ordered that flags be flown at half-staff from sunrise until sunset at the State Capitol on Saturday, June 14, 2025, in honor of Minnesota state representative Melissa Hortman, who was assassinated early Saturday morning.

“South Dakota stands in solidarity with our Minnesota neighbors as they mourn Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband. Violence has no place in our political system — and it must end,” said Governor Larry Rhoden. “Sandy and I will be praying for the families and all the loved-ones of the legislators impacted by this senseless violence.”
