How the war in Europe ended
After nearly six years of war, Adolf Hitler took his own life on April 30th, 1945, as Soviet troops closed in on Berlin. On May 7th, German General Alfred Jodl signed an unconditional surrender at Allied headquarters in Reims, France. A second signing took place in Berlin on May 8th — making it official. The war in Europe was over.

How America responded
In New York City, 250,000 people flooded into Times Square. Church bells rang coast to coast. But President Truman — in office only 26 days — kept the American flag at half-staff, honoring President Roosevelt, who had died weeks earlier and never lived to see this day. He reminded the nation that the war in the Pacific was still raging. “This is a solemn but glorious hour,” he said.
What it cost — and what the flag meant
More than 400,000 Americans gave their lives in World War II. Gold Star flags hung in windows across every city and town. The American flag had been carried from Normandy to Berlin — raised over liberated cities by exhausted, grieving men who believed in what it stood for.
When Truman said “the flags of freedom fly all over Europe,” he meant it literally. That flag flew not as a symbol of conquest — but of liberation.
