October 7, 2026 - Half Staff Alert - Alabama

I hereby authorize flags be flown at half-staff all day on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, on the grounds of the Alabama State Capitol Complex in Montgomery and throughout Etowah County to honor the life and service of former State Representative Bobby Mac Junkins who passed away at age of 79 on October 3, 2026.

Born in Gadsden and raised in Hokes Bluff, Bobby Junkins graduated from Hokes Bluff High School and was proud to be part of the first class to attend Gadsden State Junior College. He went on to earn his bachelor's and master's degrees from Jacksonville State University and performed advanced graduate work at the University of Alabama and the University of Kentucky. He spent his long life laboring in public service. He began as a teacher and adult educator, then gave 18 years to the City of Gadsden, including service as director of the Gadsden Public Library. He went on to serve two terms in Alabama House of Representatives, representing District 30, where his peers named him one of the outstanding legislators of 1984–1985. Elected Etowah County Probate Judge in 1988, he was re-elected four more times, serving thirty years until his retirement in 2019. The Alabama Law Institute chose him as one of four probate judges to help rewrite Alabama's election laws. He was past president of the Alabama Probate Judges Association and served on the boards of the Alabama Department of Archives and History, the Alabama Historical Commission, the Alabama Men's Hall of Fame, Alabama State University, the Jacksonville State University Board of Visitors, and the Gadsden State Community College Foundation. Bobby Junkins was a true public servant.

Flags on the grounds of the State Capitol Complex in Montgomery and throughout Etowah County may be flown at half-staff from sunrise through sundown on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, in honor of former Representative Bobby Junkins.
