Governor Katie Hobbs ordered flags at all state buildings be lowered to half-staff from sunrise until sunset on Aug. 1 in honor of the burial service for former Arizona Senate President Carl Kunasek, who passed away July 20 at age 94.

Kunasek served in the Arizona State Senate for six years, in the Arizona State House of Representatives for 10 years and on the Arizona Corporation Commission for seven years. A pharmacy owner in Mesa, he also served in the U.S. Air Force as a first lieutenant and was a co-founder of Arizona’s Medicaid program, the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System.

The Governor issued the following statement:

The Honorable Carl Kunasek was a dedicated public servant who cared deeply about his community and whose work improved the lives of millions of Arizonans. My condolences go out to his family. He will continue to inspire public service for years to come.

Individuals, businesses and other organizations are encouraged to join in this tribute.
