October 24, 2026 - Half-Staff Alert - Arizona

Governor Katie Hobbs ordered flags at all state buildings be lowered to half-staff from sunrise until sunset on Oct. 24 in honor of the memorial service of Sen. Jon Kyl, who passed away on Sept. 17 at age 84. He represented Arizona in both chambers of the U.S. Congress for 27 years and was appointed to the U.S. Senate again after his retirement, to serve the remainder of the late Sen. John McCain’s term.

A lawyer by trade and a widely respected legislator, Sen. Kyl was known for his expertise on water law, national security, missile defense and nuclear deterrence. The effects of his negotiations on water settlements and the federal judiciary will be felt for generations.

Governor Hobbs released the following statement:

“Sen. Jon Kyl left an indelible impact on Arizona. His approach to legislating, his deep knowledge of the issues, and his dedication to public service set him apart. I’m sending my condolences to his family and all of his loved ones.”

Individuals, businesses and other organizations are encouraged to join in this tribute.
