Governor Josh Stein has ordered all U.S. and North Carolina flags at state facilities to half-staff from sunrise September 6, 2026, through sunset September 10, 2026, in honor of American journalist and social movement activiest Gloria Steinem. Steinem died Wednesday at her home in New York City; she was 92.

Born in Toledo, Ohio, Steinem was a nationally recognized leader of women's rights. She was a columnist for New York magazine and co-founded Ms. magazine. She also co-founded the National Women's Political Caucus and Women's Action Alliance and helped to establish the Take Our Daughters to Work Day.
