August 14, 2026 - Half-Staff Alert - Virginia
Governor Abigail Spanberger today released the following statement and flag order in memory and respect of Appomattox County Deputy Burlie W. Duvall III of Concord, Virginia, who died in the line of duty and whose sacrifice represents the epitome of service.
“Deputy Duvall was a loving father and husband, a brave public servant, and a beloved member of his community. He dedicated his career to serving others and protecting those around him — living a life defined by an unwavering devotion to his family. Those who knew Deputy Duvall heard him speak often about his kids and how he delighted in their achievements and being their father.
“While on the way home from the academy, Deputy Duvall and a fellow deputy came upon a multi-vehicle crash. With a sense of duty that defined his life, Deputy Duvall called his beloved wife to tell her he would be late because he needed to assist those in need. Deputy Duvall was doing just that when he was struck by a vehicle and killed in the line of duty.
“The care Deputy Duvall showed those he worked with has remained on full display in the days since his tragic passing. His fellow deputies, the community at the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office, and former colleagues have continued to express their love for him.
“Deputy Duvall leaves behind a loving wife, three children, and family and friends who should know that the entire Commonwealth of Virginia acknowledges his bravery, commitment to duty, and sacrifice.”
