September 3, 2019 - Half-Staff Alert - Iowa

Gov. Kim Reynolds ordered all flags in Iowa to fly at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2019 to honor a fallen U.S. sailor.

Navy Signalman 3rd Class William J. Shanahan, Jr., of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was killed in action on December 7, 1941, when the USS Oklahoma was attacked by Japanese aircraft at Pearl Harbor. Shanahan’s remains were identified in May 2019 and are being returned for burial in Cedar Rapids.

Shanahan will be buried with full military honors.

Tuesday, September 3 St. Patrick’s Church 120 5th St NW Cedar Rapids, IA 10:00 a.m. **Graveside services to immediately follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery**

Flags will be at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex. Flags will also be half-staff on all public buildings, grounds and facilities throughout the state.

Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.
