November 23, 2020 - Half-Staff Alert - Michigan

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags within the State Capitol Complex and upon all public buildings and grounds across the state of Michigan to be lowered to half-staff today, Monday, November 23, 2020, in honor of Firefighter Michael Buitendorp who died in the line of duty responding to a fire. The flag-lowering will coincide with the date of his burial.

“This is a solemn day as we honor the service and bravery of Michael Buitendorp by lowering the flag across Michigan,” said Governor Whitmer. “The entire state of Michigan is indebted to Michael who answered the call to protect Michigan families. I wish his family, friends, and all those who knew him peace and love as they lay him to rest.”

Firefighter Buitendorp served at the Grant Township Fire Department. He is survived by his wife Anna and children Jasper, Isabel, Redding, and Andrew. Firefighter Buitendorp was responding to a report of a camper fire in Otto Township when he lost consciousness while driving a water tender truck.

The State of Michigan recognizes the duty, honor, and selfless service of Firefighter Michael Buitendorp by lowering flags to half-staff. Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments, and other organizations also are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff.

To lower flags to half-staff, flags should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The process is reversed before the flag is lowered for the day.

Flags should be returned to full-staff on Tuesday, November 24, 2020.
