October 20-31, 2020 - Half-Staff Alert - Texas

The Texas flag is at half-staff regionally in City of Houston.

Dear Mayor Turner:

In response to your request and pursuant to Chapter 3100 of the Texas Government Code and 4 U.S.C. §7, State of Texas and United States flags in the City of Houston may be lowered immediately to half-staff in honor of the life and public service of Houston Police Sergeant Harold Preston who was killed in the line of duty while responding to a report of domestic violence. Flags may remain at half-staff until the end of the day of his final interment once set by the family. Flags should return to full-staff the following day. Individuals, businesses, municipalities, counties, and other political subdivisions and entities in the area may fly flags at half-staff for the same period of time as a sign of honor and respect.

The First Lady and I extend our prayers of comfort to the Preston family during their time of grief and we urge all Texans to remember and honor Sgt. Preston’s service to the City of Houston and the State of Texas.

Respectfully,

Governor Greg Abbott

Governor Greg Abbott today issued a statement after it was reported that two Houston Police Officers were shot in the line of duty this morning. Sergeant Harold Preston has died, and Officer Courtney Waller remains in the hospital with injuries.

"Our hearts are with the family of Houston Police Sgt. Harold Preston who was shot and killed in the line of duty this morning," said Governor Abbott. "This tragic loss is a grave reminder of the dangers our brave law enforcement officers face while keeping our communities safe. Cecilia and I ask our fellow Texans to join us in lifting up Sgt. Preston's family in prayer in their time of need. We also ask all Texans to pray for the speedy recovery of Houston Police Officer Courtney Waller who was shot while responding to the same incident and is recovering in the hospital. The state stands ready to assist the Houston Police Department in bringing to justice the perpetrators of this horrific tragedy."
